Former City Link speeding driver admits ‘I am a fool’

A man who sped through East Reading at 43mph in a 30mph zone just days after he had been disqualified from driving admitted, “I am a fool to myself”.

Magistrates agreed and sent Mark Bushnell to jail for eight weeks, but suspended the sentence for a year.

However, the 40-year-old, of Rembrandt Way in Southcote, does have to carry out 200 hours’ of unpaid work before March 2011 and has been banned from driving for another 18 months.

This is on top of a six-month ban he received at North Oxfordshire Magistrates’ Court in March.

Bushnell appeared at Reading Magistrates’ Court on March 29 where he admitted three driving counts all dating from Sunday, March 14, in Kings Road.

The vehicle involved was a Vauxhall Movano.

He admitted driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and driving at 13mph above the speed limit.

Tom Emerson, prosecuting, said: “At 8.35pm, the defendant was stopped by police and identified himself. He was arrested, taken to the police station and fully admitted the offences.”

Former part-time City Link worker Bushnell, representing himself, said he knew he had been disqualified but assumed the ban did not start until he received an official letter from the DVLA.

He said: “I was waiting for a letter from the DVLA. I was waiting for a second opinion.”

Referring to his speeding, he said: “I thought it was a 40mph speed limit. I’m a fool to myself. I cocked up big time.” Bushnell does not have to pay any costs.
