Anarchist letter explodes, injuring postman in Italy

ilan, Italy - A letter bomb containing threats against Italy's interior minister exploded Saturday, causing slight injuries to a postman at a mail depot in Milan.

The postman, 56-year-old Pietro De Simone, suffered minor burns to his hands and hair, Milan daily Corriere della Sera reported on its website.

The letter was addressed to an office of the anti-immigration Northern League party - the junior partner in Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi's conservative coalition.

A note found inside the envelope referred to Interior Minister Roberto Maroni of the Northern League, accusing him of complicity in "rapes" that, it was claimed, occur in holding centres for illegal immigrants.

The note was signed "Sisters in arms," a moniker that police say is used by anarchist groups operating in Milan and other parts of northern Italy, according to Corriere della Sera.

The incident and the discovery late Friday at Milan's Linate airport of a letter containing a bullet and threats against Berlusconi, have raised tensions ahead of key regional elections in Italy scheduled for Sunday and Monday.

Over 40 million Italian are eligible to cast ballots in voting set to take place in 13 of Italy's 20 regions, including Lombardy, which encompasses Milan.
