Taipei - Postman Tsai You-li has had to deliver letters to the dead for the first time in his 31 years on the job, in the wake of this month's disaster from Typhoon Morakot. When the road to Hsinkai in Kaohsiung County, south Taiwan, was reopened Thursday for the first time since the August 8 storm, Tsai rode by motorbike to the village to deliver hundreds of letters, the China Times reported Friday.

It was his first trip to Hsinkai since Typhoon Morakot hit Kaohsiung County, killing nearly 600 people including 31 in Hsinkai.

Standing on a heap of mudslide where the 31 mountain villagers and their houses were buried, Tsai held up the letters and shouted: "My brothers, if you hear me, please come and pick up your letters."

Tsai wept.

Reporters on the scene asked why he called out to people who were dead.

Tsai said that he has been delivering letters to his village for 31 years.

"When the villagers heard my shouts, they could run out of their houses to greet me and pick up their mail. I know all the villagers and their backgrounds. They are like my family members," he said.

"I know they are dead. But if they hear me and know that I have brought a letter for them, maybe they can leave this world with a content heart."

The official casualty list is 141 dead, 440 missing and 45 injured. Most of the missing were buried in the mountain valleys in Kaohsiung County under mudslides up to 10 metres deep.

Grief can do strange things to people. It probably helped him, calling out for the Villagers. Even though they aren't there anymore.
