SAINSBURY’S has named Whiston-based Home Delivery Network (HDN) as its primary carrier of parcels.

The supermarket is launching a non-food online business and will be using HDN’s 24 and 48-hour services.

Home Delivery Network Limited already handles more than 120m items each year – more than 300,000 every day via its collection of 58 depots around the country.

HDN chief executive Brian Gaunt said: “We are delighted to be working in partnership with such a powerful brand as Sainsbury's. We look forward to helping Sainsbury’s grow their on-line proposition by making the home shopping experience as easy and rewarding for their customers as a visit to their local Sainsbury’s store.”

David James, head of non-food logistics for Sainsbury’s said: “The extension of our online proposition into non food requires us to provide our customers with a consistently high level of delivery service to the home as well as the ability for them to have their parcels delivered to suit their busy lifestyles.

“Having researched the market we believe that HDN are the market leader in both of these important areas.”

HDN is the biggest home delivery service outside the Royal Mail, with more than 7,000 employees, around half of them drivers.

It is part of the Barclay brothers’ empire and has strong links with fellow Barclays company Shop Direct, but is run separately.

Lots of them delivery out of cars these days, I saw one today, he had his son (I'm assuming it was his son) doing the actual deliver while he sat in the car.

It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.

The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.
