Royal Mail privatisation: Reaction on the street

As the Royal Mail is privatised, the BBC's personal finance correspondent Simon Gompertz has been hearing the views of members of the public.

People against privatisation described it as "outrageous", "a tragedy" and becoming more "money-driven".

While those supporting the move said it was "good for encouraging investment" and "a good idea - if you can make a few quid out of it".

When did this Government ever care about what the public think anyway.

Back in the 1960s when Harold Wilson had the sense to recognise the public opinion expressed in the Grosvenor Square riots and resisted great pressure from the USA to send British troops to Vietnam. :Very Happy If only Tony Bliar had had similar backbone.

Actually I think that over recent years political parties have become more and more likely to adopt populist policies to appeal to the electorate. Or at least to the parts of the electorate that they think they need to win elections. What this Government has done more successfully than ever before is to use friendly media to influence opinion so that the public thinks the policies are a good idea before they are announced. The pre-emptive right wing media attacks on university students, benefits claimants and public sector workers are obvious examples.
