Government should be ashamed of its grubby greed and risible rush to sell the Royal Mail

Tories ignore public opinion in their haste to make a fast buck before the next general election
MOST Royal Mail workers are against it. So are the vast majority of the public, subpostmasters and countryside groups.
Even Postman Pat is worried, says his creator.
Yet despite overwhelming opposition, the Government yesterday ploughed ahead with privatising the 500 year old Royal Mail.
One thing for sure is that the sale will boost the Treasury’s coffers as the government begins to prepare for a 2015 general election.
But the fears of many remain, including what will happen to prices and jobs in the short term and post offices and the universal service pledge in the long run.
Ministers are quick to dismiss dissenters, arguing Royal Mail needs funds to complete its modernisation.
They point to countries abroad where they say privatisation has been a success but conveniently forget those places where it’s proved a mess.
By rushing through the sale, the Government has cynically ensured it is done before there are scenes of Royal Mail workers manning picket lines.
But its grubby and despicable handling of the process will leave long in the memory. It should be ashamed.
