Alan Johnson: Royal Mail privatisation will send service into a "downward spiral"

Hull West and Hessle MP Alan Johnson has called the privatisation of Royal Mail "a disaster."

Business secretary Vince Cable says the Government's taking action "to secure a healthy future for the company."
The deal could be worth up to £3-billion, with 10% of the shares going to the 160,000 strong workforce.

Mr Johnson, a former postman and Communication Workers Union General Secretary, says the unions are planning to vote on strike action:

"They'll be despondent, despite the fact that Government are waving money in front of them.

"It's going to be a downward spiral for their terms and conditions, and more importantly a downward spiral for the service they offer to the public.

"The Government says they've got legislation to prevent loss of services. You could drive a horse and coach through that legislation, because a private sector organisation will be liable to make a profit for their shareholders."

He also added that the Royal Mail has been making a profit in the public sector:

"Those profits go to build hospitals and schools- they go back to the taxpayer because it's a publicly owned service.

"They don't have the argument that privatisation is the only way to rescue it, because it's actually very successful in the public sector."

How naive. No, those profits go to all the companies that now make a profit from their involvement in hospitals and schools.

Most of what he says seems reasonable to me, unfortunately! But then again........i always liked Alan Johnson, even if ambition perhaps did get the better of him.
