Ballot papers calling for strike action will be sent to 120,000 Royal Mail workers next week.

A notice from the Communication Workers Union to all branches, seen by the Mirror, says the ballot will open on September 27 and close on October 16.

A result should be known the same day, paving the way for the first strike to take place on October 23 at the earliest.

A letter to CWU members says: “This is a defining moment for the future of the postal industry, Royal Mail and your job.”

The dispute centres on pay, pensions and the Government’s plans to privatise the Royal Mail.

Yet research suggests small ­investors are planning to shun the sell-off.

More than half of private investors, questioned by share dealing service SharePrice, said they opposed the flotation or feared it would be a flop.

Meanwhile Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond has vowed to reverse the privatisation in an independent Scotland.
