It's all over
99% in my office now saying - if we are going to be privatised anyway there is no point striking'
now I know and you know there are many other issues included in the strike ballot
If the CWU doesn't get it's finger out of it arse and make this point QUICK then as the title says 'It is all over'
Now they are saying no point in losing money over something that we can't stop
If the CWU don't do something quick then I fear it will be a 'No' in the strike ballot no matter what any of us on here think

Re: It's all over
Its only just beginning
Royal Mail doesn't always get its way.
And the fact is privatisation is different - they have to convince someone to buy it, and a strike is a good way of convincing them not to - after all the Tories and Vince CAble can spin all they like about how its a done deal - that's just propaganda for public consumption, to make workers and those who oppose a sell off give up. The fact is they can't hold a gun to the head of an investor and make them buy it.
Let's get a massive yes vote and strike - Royal Mail not for Sale!

Bravo goinpostal
let's MAKE them understand that they may get away with B&H against 1, or 2,000 members, or 20,000 but not 150,000.
Surely??
Surely??

If people are worried there's not much coming out from the centre, email or phone the office and let them know, it will help egg them on to get communications out tho i'd be surprised if something wasn't coming out this week (still way late).

Re: It's all over
I have to say in the last 3 weeks I have been to 16 different offices and addressed 20 seperate delivery offices and once the issues have been explained and you the members air their views and opinions they are all supportive and knowing this is a battle which can't be lost.
Now I know other reps who have been doing the same thing and they have all been roughly the same , yes some have a leave over of 2010 but mostly the fact that we were out for 18 days whilst the majority of offices were not. but once you explained issue then it is mostly understood.
Now of course there might be other areas not having meetings but lets hope they start having them.
I am confident that our members will vote yes cause the alternative is your worst nightmare coming true.

Re: It's all over
Fish I am not from HQs but we have never had a national unit reps meeting and every local rep now has the information to hold a meeting. The offices where Divisional and Area Reps should target is those where the Branch or local rep has asked for someone else to go their.
In our patch we offer a traffic light system where area reps and branch officials confirm who they believe have had meetings and are ok to go , those who still need a meeting and those who need a Divisional rep to attend.
It has served us well over the years.

Re: It's all over
Im originally from your area dingo, and my old office always had decent union reps. The place i transfered to is totally different and has a reputation as being strike breakers. Because of this the union hardly bothers with us at all. As a union member who has never broke a strike in approaching 30 years and was with you last time doing 16 days out, i canvassed a poll today amongst a few people as to possibly going out. Not looking good at all, although a few do see that this is important others just dont care and say we never go out! (apparently some climbed a fence to get in last time) Tbh im hoping im off when the strikes are on because i dont want to be on me todd at the gate with people
as the go in. Certainly no sign of anyone senior in the union making an appearance to change minds.

If members don't back the CWU it will be seen as the dreaded 'vote of no confidence' in our Union and then all hell will really break loose !

Re: It's all over
Went to a union meeting for our MC today.Only 10% could be bothered to show up!
The union may not have covered themselves in glory these past few years, but a lot of reps are still trying to fight the employer on many fronts.
Whats the betting that it will be the 90% that shout loudest about being letdown by the CWU when we end up in the gutter?
Some people need to look up the word UNION in the dictionary.......

Re: It's all over
A strike will have little effect on privatisation. The point of striking is to get the best terms possible when privatisation happens.

A strike will have a massive affect on the Tories/LibDems ability to sell off Royal Mail.Spedley wrote:A strike will have little effect on privatisation. The point of striking is to get the best terms possible when privatisation happens.
Dingo I agree that local and divisional officers should work with reps to cover the areas, identify weak places or respond to requests, and the traffic light system sounds interesting.
I think though that we could get even further - much further - in terms of winning the argument and steeling people if the national leadership - the ones who ultimately control the stop and go of a strike - are out in the areas touring and showing they are serious about a fight. Not just responding to calls but getting out their and leading from the front imo. That would be a massive boost to local efforts to strengthen the strike.
Start with the biggest cities, the biggest offices and work their way out from there.
