Sheffield Protest at plans to privatise Royal Mail

Postman Pat joined trade unionists, activists and members of the public at a rally in Sheffield to oppose Government plans to privatise Royal Mail.

The Government plan to privatise the postal system, claiming it will make the service more efficient.

But protesters opposed to the plans claim privatisation will push a profitable part of the public sector into the hands of multinational corporations,

Pat and his comrades at the rally chanted ‘Royal Mail not for sale’ and ‘Public service not private profit’.

Members of the public were urged to sign a postcard of protest which will then be sent to Deputy Prime Minister and Sheffield Hallam MP Nick Clegg.

Play Clays, UCW regional secretary said: “Recent polls tell us what we already thought – the vast majority of the British public oppose the privatisation of Royal Mail. Our publicly owned Post Office is up for sale, yet is contributing hundreds of millions of pounds back to the Treasury in profit.

“This is ideological madness and a cynical drive to push profitable parts of the public sector into the hands of greedy multinational corporations, many of whom do not even pay their taxes.”
