HUNDREDS of people signed up to a union campaign to oppose the privatisation of the Royal Mail in a Teesside town yesterday (Wednesday, August 14).

More than 300 people wrote postcards to the town’s Liberal Democrat MP, Ian Swales, criticising him for voting for the privatisation of the service.

They were persuaded to fill in the postcards by Communication Workers Union members who manned a stall on Redcar High Street.

Union representative Neil Bendelow, who helped organise the event, said altogether about 400 to 500 postcards had now been sent to the MP.

He claimed the privatisation could eventually lead to job cuts and worse conditions for the Royal Mail workers, but also a worse service to the public.

“We deliver to farms miles from anywhere near Guisborough, a private provider just wouldn’t be interested in that kind of thing,” he said. “They say the service would be enshrined in law, but they’re the majority in parliament, they can just change the law.”

Mr Bendelow said people were also worried about proposals for the town’s main Post Office to be closed and moved into a shop in the town.

Mr Swales could not be contacted for comment.
