Midlothian MSP opposes privatisation of Royal Mail

Midlothian North MSP Colin Beattie (SNP) has publicly voiced his opposition to the privatisation of Royal Mail.

Recent figures have revealed that Scots are more satisfied with the performance of Royal Mail than residents from the rest of the UK, despite Westminster’s attempts to privatise it.

The survey from Ofcom, which looked at how the public felt about the postal service, found that people in Scotland are “significantly more likely to say they are very satisfied, compared to people across the whole of the UK”.

It also found that 93 per cent of Scots are satisfied with the service.

However the Westminster government wishes to privatise Royal Mail with Business Secretary Vince Cable announcing that it will seek to float Royal Mail on the London Stock Exchange.

Mr Beattie said: “I cannot understand why the UK government is so intent on privatising Royal Mail in Scotland when these figures clearly show that Scots are happy with Royal Mail and the service they provide.

“Recent figures have suggested that 77 per cent of Scots are totally opposed to privatising the Royal Mail. I absolutely oppose privatisation of the Royal Mail.”
