Government needs to ‘think again’ about Royal Mail

by Ruth Harris of the Communication Workers Union

Following the announcement of the flotation of Royal Mail, the Communication Workers Union has written to Mike Fallon MP, minister of state for business and enterprise, urging the government to think again on the privatisation of Royal Mail and consider a new approach to secure the future of the company.

Closing the Portsmouth processing office is just a cost-cutting exercise to make the company more attractive for the government’s plans for privatisation.

There will be a deterioration in service. The CWU invites the government to work with it – the logical step being to consider keeping the company in public ownership, while putting in place a ‘not for dividend structure’, that allows the profits to be put back into improving services.

All MPs need to think very seriously about both the workforce and public’s views – privatisation is not wanted or needed.

Royal Mail’s annual profits show it is able to succeed in public ownership.

Privatisation will mean higher prices and the end to the six-day ‘one price goes anywhere’ service.

The workforce has worked hard during the last three years in a modernisation programme to deliver the profitable organisation that Royal Mail is today.

I urge the public to support the CWU’s Save our Royal Campaign, which can be accessed online, or write to your MP, or sign the postcards and petitions, which are being widely distributed in your communities over the coming weeks.

By acting quickly we can stop this privatisation.

The British Heritage will be lost, don’t let the Queen’s head be privatised, save our Royal Mail.
