Royal Mail workers are set to protest in Nottinghamshire today as part of a campaign to keep the UK postal service in the hands of the taxpayer.

Members of the Communication Workers Union will meet outside Hucknall Post Office in Nottingham from around 10.30am to highlight the threats posed by proposals to privatise the service.

Business Secretary Vince Cable announced plans to sell off up to 90 per cent of the Royal Mail last month, adding:

"The time has come for the government to step back from Royal Mail and allow its management to focus wholeheartedly on growing the business and planning for the future."

Crowds turn up to protest against Royal Mail changes

A GROUP of campaigners turned up to protest against changes to the Royal Mail in Hucknall earlier today.

The Save Our Royal Mail campaign aims to highlight the threats posed by the sell-off of the service which was announced by the Government last month.

Campaigners turned up to Hucknall Post Office on High Street from 10.30am to midday, led by the Communication Workers Union (CWU).

Leonié Mathers, Labour's candidate for Sherwood at the next general election, said: "It's great to see so many people out here to protect what is a really important public service.

"Everyone knows we need reform in the Royal Mail, the CWU accept that, we all accept that however we need to make sure the important services are protected and that the moment the Government plans at the moment just don't do that. That's why we are out here today fighing for the royal mail.


Darren Glebocki, for the Communication Workers’ Union Nottingham and district Branch said: “Governments of various political persuasions have attempted to sell some or all of Royal Mail at various points in time since the 1980s, each time making unfounded claims to justify the sell-off. The truth of the matter is that the planned sell-off of Royal Mail is pure political ideology, nothing more, nothing less.”
