Stroud Labour Party shows concerns about Royal Mail privatisation

THE people of Stroud district are being urged by Stroud Labour Party to write to their MP about Royal Mail privatisation.

Labour warns that prices will go up and rural areas could lose post offices, maybe even ending up having to collect their own post, as already happens in some European countries.

“It’s not difficult to predict what will happen if Royal Mail is privatised,” says David Drew, Labour’s parliamentary candidate.

“The owners and shareholders will only be interested in the profit margin. So prices will go up as much as they’re allowed by the regulator.

"Delivery will be contracted out to the company offering the cheapest price and paying its workers the least money.

"The universal service will be eroded – so individuals and businesses in rural areas will get a worse service and we’ll see more post offices closed.

"In many countries people in rural areas have to pick up their post from the nearest town and the countryside could end up very isolated.”

David said that even the Bow Group, the oldest Conservative think-tank in Britain, has warned that privatisation could see the price of a stamp increase and post offices in rural areas close.

Stroud Labour Party will be working with the Communication Workers Union on a campaign against privatisation.

“We want everyone to write to our MP to ask him to vote against privatisation,” says Stroud Labour Party chairman, Steve Lydon.

“What happens with privatisation is that while the workers get lower wages and worse terms and conditions, and the customers will get a worse service, the directors and shareholders will get their bonuses and high salaries.

"Eventually the owners will decide to capitalise on their assets and there’ll be nothing to stop the company being sold on.

"And experience tells us that other former national industries (eg electricity, gas and water) have ended up being run by other similar companies in Europe or the US."

I wrote to my MP who is a Conservative member and he was not a bit concerned and said that Royal Mail needed the investment, total waste of time, does someone really think that writing to complain will scare the pants off them ?

Well if everyone sticks together and tells him he won,t be re-elected that might scare the pants off him or her.
