Royal Mail could be hit by a summer strike after unions threatened to bring forward a walkout ballot if talks with bosses fail.

The Communication Workers Union voted to hold a strike ballot over pay and pensions by the end of September, but a spokeswoman for the CWU told The Mail on Sunday this weekend: ‘If things go spectacularly wrong we may hit the button sooner.’

The union is locked in talks with bosses and has won agreement from its 115,000 members for a full strike ballot if ‘satisfactory’ agreement is not reached on working conditions, job security and pensions.

Union militancy has cast a shadow over plans to privatise Royal Mail this autumn with a public share sale expected to value the business at up to £3billion.

‘We are starting to see more part-time working creeping in at Royal Mail, with staff having hours and workload changed and some full-time managers being made part-time,’ the union spokeswoman said.

The Government plans to give ten per cent of shares to postal staff automatically as part of the privatisation. Most will not be allowed to sell the shares for three years, but Ministers are looking at allowing those near retirement to cash in shares immediately.

The Minister overseeing the privatisation, Michael Fallon, told The Mail on Sunday: ‘Everyone is in favour of people being restricted from selling the shares for a quick buck the following morning. But there may be staff who want to realise their value at the point of retirement.’

The union spokeswoman said: ‘The shares are not the issue, people are more concerned about whether they will have a job after privatisation and what the working conditions will be.’

She slammed Royal Mail for ‘private sector excess’ after it was revealed chief executive Moya Greene was paid £1.47million for 2012-13 – 72 times the average pay of a postman – and a £488,000 bonus.

Why is it always branded as "Union militancy" whenever we stick up for ourselves? I suggest it's the bosses and this Tory government which is militant by marching over the working class and their rights.

MCs have been introducing PT managers (or supervisors as they should be known) for some time mainly to cover the peak processing period of 17:00-22:00ish.
