There is something rather reassuring, almost romantic, about the Royal Mail.

Whether it’s the familiar red vans, the next day delivery or the sight of the morning postman. These are timeless British scenes that people can resonate with.

The Royal Mail is, along with our railways and other services, an institution that belongs in the public sector. It is ours. Whether it’s a rural outpost in Penzance or a farm in North Scotland. A stamp costs the same. A 1st class letter should arrive the nextday. That is the beauty of the universal service.

One that puts delivering letter on time first, profit second. So why is privatisation back on the agenda? Yet, let’s not be fooled by government reasons for selling off a bit more of the family silver.

Firstly, the Royal Mail currently makes a profit.

Secondly, it competes with the private sector.

Thirdly, it has a flexible workforce that has changed to suit demands in recent years.

This is a first class organisation that is set to be sold off by a second rate government. Even Thatcher wouldn’t contemplate the p word when it came to our national mail provider. This should not be allowed to happen. Since 1516 Royal mail has delivered a service which people depend on, like and respect..Our letters, cards and parcels should not be sold off for the sake of a quick buck.

The Royal Mail has been in public ownership for 500 years. Long may that continue to be the case.
