Selling off Royal Mail will wreck postal service

Recently the Tories announced their highly-controversial plan to privatise the Royal Mail.

This is despite the damaging implications it might have for pensioners and the disabled among others.

As has been proved in the past, privatisation is only for the benefit of profiteers and is not in the general public’s interest.

Privatising this highly-respected 372-year-old institution is yet another kick in the teeth for our public services.

It is feared that foreign companies will take over the Royal Mail, as they did with our water, gas and electricity, and profits will flow out of the country.

Privatisation failed in the rail industry and led to higher fares and a poorer service.

If Royal Mail is sold off, it will wreck our postal services.

This will mean higher stamp prices, job cuts, post office closures and the daily postal service will be threatened.

Recently, more than 96 per cent of the 112,000 postal workers voted strongly against these unpopular proposals.

That is despite the carrot being offered in the form of share options.

In Government, and in opposition, Labour has strongly opposed wholesale privatisation of the Royal Mail.

What makes these proposals even more worrying is that the Royal Mail is flourishing in public ownership.

We want it to remain that way.

Royal Mail raked in £440m profit last year, and that is why the city vultures are moving in.

Even the late Mrs Thatcher – the Queen of privatisation – shied away from selling off the Royal Mail.

This tells you everything you need to know about Cameron, Clegg and their excuse of a Government.
