DO YOU like receiving proper letters? Letters and cards with news from family and friends are still more fun than e-mails. Letters are particularly important for our servicemen and women, bringing news of home and loved ones.

As a child, sent home to boarding school in the UK, I adored getting letters from my parents, who were stationed abroad by the Army, mostly in Germany.

One of our sons is joining the Army, and Kate and I will be writing to him in Germany, when he joins his new regiment there in the autumn.

There has – rightly – been a huge amount of interest in the privatisation of Royal Mail.

Letters matter to everyone and the British system, whereby every home in the country is entitled to deliveries six days a week, is precious.

Having a good service for parcels and packets is vital to small businesses as well as households. I have just met with a senior official of Royal Mail to discuss many of the issues arising from the impending privatisation. Several items are non-negotiable – for example, the 100 per cent delivery network and six-day-a-week delivery would be tied in on the face of the legislation of the bill.

The other concern we all have is price increases. The second class stamp is now regulated for the next eight years, to a maximum of a 7p rise over that period. While first class is not laid down in quite the same rigorous fashion, both it and the cost of second class after the eight-year period will be subject to adjudication by the Regulator.

The Armed Forces' postal service, BFPO, is funded by the MoD, and not by Royal Mail, so the BFPO's function would not be in any way affected by privatisation, as Royal Mail would remain the MoD funded carrier either way.

Many people are asking why privatise? The bottom line is that Royal Mail desperately needs investment, but the Government cannot afford to make this investment itself at a time of extreme pressure on public finances.

One feature I am particularly glad to see is that postal workers will get some of the shares, giving them a stake in the business.

It is reminiscent of the first big public sector privatisation – BT. Once part of the Post Office, as a private company BT was able to invest and waiting lists for telephone installations disappeared.

Let us hope it goes equally well for Royal Mail.
