Dave Ward, the Communication Workers Union's deputy general secretary says he believes "there's a better alternative" to privatisation for Royal Mail.
His comments come following Business Secretary, Vince Cable's, announcement that the Government plans to privatise the company in a £3 billion pound sell-off.
"We don't believe what the government is saying is true and let's be absolutely clear, privatisation of Royal Mail is not going to secure the future long-term success of the company," said the deputy general secretary Mr Ward.
Members of the Communication Workers Union are taking part in a week-long bus protest against the plans.
Their route included the headquarters of banks said to be involved in the sale arrangements – UBS, Goldman Sachs and Merrill Lynch – the London Stock Exchange, the Department for Business, Ofcom and Coalition parties' offices.
During the announcement today Mr Cable outlined plans to give 150,000 Royal Mail staff members shares in the new company, which would come to the sum of £2,000 each.
However Mr Ward rejected these proposals saying that the plan would inevitably lead to a "down dialling of service standards" with the company eventually not delivering to areas of the country which were unprofitable.
