Six-day post to stay despite Royal Mail hive-off

Post will continue to drop through Britain’s letter boxes six days a week, despite Royal Mail’s impending multi-billion-pound privatisation, the industry regulator said today.

Ofcom ruled that the universal postal service, which covers six-day deliveries, next-day post and first-class and second-class stamps, will continue despite fears that cost-cutting ahead of privatisation would lead to postmen being given a day off on Saturdays.

The watchdog also said it was protecting against the removal of post boxes in remote rural areas.

What rubbish. We will continue to make deliveries 6 days a week for now. There is the very real possibility that after privatisation, we will drop to a 5 day service as it is the fastest/easiest way to cut costs. As a rough guide, RM could cut 1/6th of wages/energy & fuel bills etc etc.

As for us being 'given' a day off on Saturdays. :left: :left: :left: Who came up with that crap? Those that are lucky enough to remain in a job after a sixth of the jobs get cut, for them it's fine, although it basically means your day off gets moved from midweek. For them that lose their jobs, would that then constitute them being 'given 52 weeks a year off'? :evil/mad

It'll stay that way until the seventh day of May 2015. After that, well, who knows...

Everything is going to be wonderful until the privateers move in. The one saving grace is that Labour will win the next election and will try to delay change as long as possible - not the privatisation but the USO at least.

They're going to have to keep the back benchers sweet add to that the CWUs obvious influence resulting from the financial backing and hey presto. :left:

Dvbuk what you said there was protentialy close to the truth. labour could kill the sell off if they come out strong against it and say they will reverse it if elected. Would any investor really buy a share of a company when they know the likely new Government is going to change it .

How many privatisations did Labour reverse from 1997-2010?
How many anti-trade union laws did they repeal from 1997-2010?
If we're expecting Labour to save us we're as good as sold.
There are maybe 30-40 decent Labour MPs in the House of Commons and i'm being kind, the rest have to be reminded each day which side to sit on.
good times, bad times you know I've had my share

Has everybody forgotten the attempts Labour made to sell off RM when they were in power? Why would they reverse it now? The company's getting sold. Can't see anything stopping it or delaying it. The current timeline is within the next financial year, so that's by no later than the first week in April 2014.

The only questions are in what form the sale will take, who will buy, and how it affects the staff and service we provide.

Sadly I was only joking - once sold there is no return - the money raised will be swallowed up by the deficit. Labour may not be a stand alone government and may have to rely on the Lib Dems but even if they are they will not have a large majority and will consequently choose very carefully what they put before Parliament - as for reversing the sell off :hmmmm well they don't have a great record on that score. We shouldn't forget that it was Labour who wanted a partial sell off under Mandelson's auspices. Labour may not even win the next election, I think they will but if they don't RM as it stands now will be nothing like the organisation we have today. Jobs and services will be hived off just as other service industries have been. The thing is can the CWU prevent it even with the backing of the workforce?

The past is the past maybe just maybe see a way to stop this sell off ! Lets just see how things develop. Then we can decide who was right or wrong !

Some of us think that Mandelsons partial sell off was the lesser of the two evils because now it's all in.

It would have been a lesser evil if he had put a 20% cap on competition access instead of the fill your boots free for all thats resulted in the likes of tnt and uk mail having a seat at the table in all talks on regulation and the future of the USO .Mandelson rigged the market and set us up for privatisation.

the Labour party have recently said they got it wrong on PFI , 10p tax, immigration etc ..its about time they said they got it wrong on Royal Mail

Will the CWU threaten to stop payments to the Labour party if they don't change their minds over privatisation ?

Or will the CWU still keep giving them money, dispite the privatisation policy of the Labour party.

The second option.
