US-based UPS’s €5.2bn purchase of TNT of the Netherlands will probably intensify competition in UK parcel delivery, one of the few growing segments of the postal market. That’s bad news for Moya Greene, well-meaning Canadian boss of Royal Mail, who Lombard suspects may not have realised quite what she was letting herself in for when she took the job.

The business, if it can be described as such, has been plagued by low morale and old-fashioned working practices. Ms Greene has led a shift towards automation and has also had a hand in offloading a stonking pensions deficit on to the taxpayer. That would normally help pave the way for a privatisation.

However, Royal Mail is still lumbered with delivering letters at uneconomic prices, which triggered a £41m divisional loss at the half-year stage. It is also compelled to drop off packages and letters fed into its handy distribution system by fully commercial rivals. As a result, Royal Mail is unlikely to provide an imminent windfall for the chancellor. The regulatory landscape for postal services is oddly tilted both against the dominant state-owned business and a government theoretically keen to cash in on its ownership.

Do we have old-fashoned working practices? Do the FT mean delivery by cycle which is cheaper, more efficient and environmentally friendly than the vans?

In what substantive way do out MCs and DO differ from those in Holland? Or is this propaganda?
