Coalition's broken pledge on Post Office closures will put final nail in the coffin of unique British institution

WHEN they wanted voters to support them, the Tories and LibDems promised they would halt Post Office closures if they won power.

Yet since the coalition was formed, these ­invaluable lifelines for some of the most ­vulnerable people in the country have continued to shut at the rate of three a week.

The way the Government squirms out of ­breaking its pledge is to say that these are only “long-term temporary closures”. The reality is that few will ever open their doors again.

As long as Post Offices are treated as no ­different from any other shop or organisation, they have no future. Yet they are an essential part of ­communities and provide a real ­service to pensioners and people on low incomes who are rejected by the big banks.

Certainly New Labour cannot be proud of its record in protecting Post Offices. But the Tories and LibDems look set to put the final nail in the coffin of these unique British institutions.

Can’t any of our politicians see that their value to society can’t just be measured in saving a few pounds?
