Falling volumes - more competition

Can somebody please explain the logic of this? We are constantly told trhat mail volumes are falling and yet we are told that more competition will benefit the customer. If we have less mail to post then why would dividing a smaller market among more companies make sense? To make a profit in these circumstances means only one thing -increased prices. How does this benefit the customer?
Also, when Royal Mail managers tell us postmen that volumes are falling, does this include downstream access? We still have to put these letters on our back whether hey are included in the figures or not.

Bulkmailers mainly but then the media and DSA companies do try to mislead the public into thinking they mean consumers.

RMC has been saying that for ages - you know the DSA leeches argument and people suggestiing that volumes might not include DSA.

Well at last the concept of volume in profit terms and volume in over-the-shoulder terms has registered. The only competition, such as it is, is in Bulk as we all know. Mind you all this posturing is small potatoes compared to the sell off.

Well at last the concept of volume in profit terms and volume in over-the-shoulder terms has registered.

The argument was never the difference in volumes in profit or weight terms. The argument was that they (as in management) used the Volume is down (the profit side) so you are not as busy (which is patently the weight on shoulder issue) so they were using one argument falsely to suggest we were not working as hard as we should.

Volumes of mail are not down.we The junk we deliver for our competitors is not counted or charged for at a profitable rate.Strange!Maybe it will be looked at shortly before the sell off,In what other business would you help the competition!Maybe Mcdonalds will be giving away big macs to Burger king employees next.We are setting ourselves up to fail and maybe thats the masterplan, interesting times ahead for all RM WORKERS.

Never ever worked in a DO then

Agree with the inefficiencies, and yet still RM Management keeping adding more. For instance Walk Sequenced Mail is quicker to throw in, problem is the machines are , not very efficient and the reject rate is higher than previous "systems" and as a result we now have more misssorts. The time saved prepping a walk is now wasted because we have more IPS (down to the greater missort volume) and later last arrival into the DOs. Combined it means on an average day we have a bundle of missorts to deliver which slows you down as you merge it on the go.

Efficiency is not just introducing machines into a system, it also must be backed up by a more streamlined approach, and and a quicker processing system. RM Fail on both accounts IMHO.
