Postal workers threaten strikes against privatisation

Leaders of the postal workers’ union today warned the government that plans to privatise Royal Mail could be met by strikes.

Addressing a 500-strong rally in London against the sell off, CWU deputy general secretary, Dave Ward, said that the government’s privatisation plans threatened to undermine the agreement signed between the union and Royal Mail that settled last years’ national strike.

He warned postal workers that the coalition planned to “raid” their pensions under the pretext of bailing out the scheme’s debts.

In response, Ward insisted that the union would raise the profile of its campaign.

“The arrogance of this government is becoming clearer, and it will be a real task to defeat them,” he said, before adding, “We will go to our reps and tell them, if you want to defend your jobs, pensions and conditions, prepare for industrial action."

To loud applause, Ward finished with a rallying call for action, telling the Tories that CWU will “fight you every inch of the way.”

Labour MP Jack Dromey also caught the mood of the meeting as he said, “I pay tribute to your achievements. And, I tell you, postal workers are loved and the service you provide is also loved.

“Are you going to take the threat of privatisation lying down? The hell you are!”

At the end of the rally, around 400 workers followed CWU leaders and launched an impromptu blocking of the road outside the government’s department for business. Some 45 minutes later they were still there, despite police pleading with them to disperse.

Soon chants of “Royal Mail not for sale” were followed by slogans used by students who had demonstrated just meters away a few days earlier. Cries of “Whose streets? Our streets!” filled the air.

The crowd eventually dispersed to lobby their MPs. But it is clear that the spirit of militancy that has characterised CWU members in the past is far from extinguished.

If the union’s leadership are serious about galvanising it for strikes next year, the coalition could face one of its most serious battles yet.

After the last strike fiasco who will follow the call to strike.I cant see it but I may be wrong.If there is a vote to strike and its passed naturally I will heed it but I wonder who will have the appetite .

I lost over £1000 the last time I took strike action, and what did the CWU do for me? Stuck the 2010 & Beyond deal under my nose and told me to lump it.
My Saturdays will be entirely f****d-up, and for no other reason than the bosses want it so.
The number of D2Ds becomes limitless, with more and more of the shyte to be foisted on us.
And no payment for D2Ds, none whatsoever.

And the gormless idiots want me to strike/lose money again????

This business, and this is what it has been since 2003, a business, has been privatised in all but name, in all that time. Going the whole hog 'aint gonna make that much of a difference to a company shedding jobs like there's no tomorrow since 2003, is it.

Wish the hapless, incompetent, CWU were as quick in trying to get us out on strike in an attempt to claw back all the CWU has given away these past few years.....Now, that I would jump at supporting.

I'm assuming that the first Missed is a proper noun therefore it could be...
Missed have missed the bus...although to be honest i'm struggling to see the relevance without knowing who Missed are.

I thought that maybe there were two misseds as an emphasiser.
Have missed missed the bus - to emphasise the point that they really missed the bus by a long way.
This is common in some East African dialects but not in English as far as I am aware.

I have tried a different angle and fed it into an anagram program but the best it could come up with was Shut misbehaves misdeeds which to be honest makes about as much sense but i'm no further forward on the relevance to this thread...will keep trying...does anyone have an old enigma machine handy?

Surely you can only turn up at a party...if a party exists therefore by definition you can't simultaneously turn up at a party and miss a party...or have i missed missed the bus to the party.
