MORE than 11,000 people in Notts have signed a petition opposing Government proposals to privatise the Royal Mail.

The Keep The Post Public petition has been launched against the Government's Postal Services Bill, which would result in the Royal Mail being separated from the Post Office network and sold off.

This could be pushed through Parliament as early as Christmas.

Darren Glebocki, for the Communication Workers Union (CWU) Nottingham & District Branch, said: "The support received to date from across Notts reflects the fact that every major opinion poll in the last 20 years shows a majority of the public are against the privatisation of the Royal Mail.


"Even a majority of Lib-Dem and Conservative Party voters are against such plans.

"These privatisation plans will also result in the separation of Royal Mail from the Post Office network, which would be the death knell for many local post offices."
