On Saturday 27th November 2010 – the Labour Party held it’s first National Policy Forum (NPF) since the general election. This took place at the Priestfield Conference Centre in Gillingham, Kent.
The NPF members representing the Communication Workers Union were the General Secretary, Billy Hayes and Beryl Shepherd, national executive council member. Andy Kerr, Deputy General Secretary (telecoms) and Labour Party NEC member was in attendance. The Political Fund Management Committee Chair, and Stephen Bell Head of Policy, attended as observers. The General Secretary was re-elected by the forum as NPF Vice-Chair.

In answer to a question on the postal services bill, raised by CWU delegate, Beryl Shepherd, the Labour Party Leader, Ed Miliband MP pledged his 100% support for campaigning against the bill – which would completely privatise Royal Mail and threaten the universal service and the post office network.

Am just wondering if the Lib Dems support the bill will it be the final nail in there coffin???
if they've half a brain surely they'd vote against it,or perhaps there just focussed on helping the torie scum totally f**k everything up!!!

The Lib-Dems know if they play nice they will get 5 years of "power" and they will hope that in 5 years time the country will be coming out of recession and they can borrow some of the credit for it.
If they start voting against the party line this coalition will most likely start falling apart and we could easily have another election within 12 months at which point the Lib-Dems vote would probably be decimated.
They will vote like good little boys and girls because 5 years at the top table is better than the 20 years of feeding of the scraps that will surely follow.
Every one of those Lib-Dem MP's sees the next 5 years as their personal opportunity to make their name in politics.
None of them will risk that to save Royal Mail from privatisation.

The Lib Dems are in favour of privatisation so they aren't going to vote against...............and as ft says, they want to sit at the table at any cost......something members of the CWU must surely be used to.

Other than the fact that up to 90% could be sold off rather than just 49% there is absolutley nothing in the Postal Services BIll that does not match up with lib dem manifesto that lib dem MPS campaigned on and were elected on.

Royal Mail was a easy issue for them to reach agreemnt on with the Tories as both parties were very similar on policy.

On this issue the Lib Dems are not doing the bidding of the Tories its their idea accepted by the Tories who had no mention of a sell off in their manifesto.

I would imagine influence Lib Dems getting the buissness department and postal affairs brief, they had sell off in their manifesto so they can pilot it through the HOC and HOL. How could they possibly say no and ask for a different department?

Lib dems are history ,done and dusted ,never to resurface. Their constituency parties are falling apart and any broader electorate appeal they possessed was based on principal and independence
