MP Condemns Royal Mail Sell off
Local MP Graeme Morrice has hit out at Government plans to privatise the Royal Mail and separate it from the Post Office network.

The Conservative/Liberal Democrat Coalition Government is currently pushing through legislation in the Westminster Parliament that will see 90% of Royal Mail sold off to the private sector and its historic link with the Post Office broken.

However, Labour MPs are opposing the move and have the support of the workforce and their trade unions, including the Communication Workers Union and UNITE.

Graeme Morrice is a member of the Parliamentary Committee that is scrutinising the Postal Services Bill. He said,

‘I am appalled that the ConDem Government is trying flog-off our cherished Royal Mail to the highest bidder in the private sector – even if it means the service ends up in foreign hands or split up. It will without doubt result in a worsening of the present service and put at risk the universal six day delivery and first class next-day post guarantee.’

‘There will also be no guarantee – as there is now – that a private Royal Mail company will continue to use the Post Office network, which relies heavily on the letter and parcel service for its income. This could force the closure of some post offices, especially in smaller communities. ‘

‘There is no doubt that postal services need to modernise and adapt to changes in the world of communication but rather than put in the necessary investment to secure the future of this essential public service, the Tories and their Lib Dem pals would rather sell it for a quick buck. It is political ideological gone mad!’
