Paul Reuter, Unite national officer, said: "The privatisation of Royal Mail is unnecessary as the business has already reached agreement with the unions to modernise, something that is currently happening.

"The postal services bill shows that the government has no idea how to implement its policy of a sell-off. There is little interest in the market for a high value sell-off and the population of the UK already owns the Royal Mail.

"We are currently experiencing job cuts, under privatisation this would get even worse.

"If private equity takes an interest in Royal Mail this will only be for short-term profit through asset stripping. Private equity is not in business to provide a public service, it is out to make money, pure and simple."
