Royal Mail try to silence opposition to privatisation

Government plans to give employees shares in a privatised Royal Mail are an attempt to mute opposition to the sell-off and undermine workers’ solidarity.

The scheme would see Royal Mail staff offered up to 10 percent of the firm, with the remainder handed to private investors or a rival operator.

“The government wants us to take our eyes off what really matters—our pay and our conditions—in favour of something as volatile as a share scheme,” CWU union executive member Noel McClean told Socialist Worker in a personal capacity.

“The shares are a way of pitting worker against worker. They want us to think that we have an individual stake in the business, and that standing up for your colleagues when they are under attack is no longer the right thing to do.”

The union must tap into the anger against management to defeat the sell-off.

March to stop the closure of Stevenage mail centre, Saturday 30 October. Assemble 12.30pm, Stevenage mail centre, London Road, SG1 1AA
