ROYAL MAIL: private and expensive?

Kent Greens have condemned the Conservative-Liberal Democrat Coalition Government for their plans to privatise most of the Royal Mail. Stuart Jeffery, Campaigns Officer of Kent Green Party, comments:

“The latest assault on our postal service comes on the heels of the 400 job cuts across West Kent's sorting offices announced last week. Kent Greens have written to the local Communications Workers Union expressing their solidarity with the union. Kent Greens want to see the Royal Mail stay in public hands and receive investment to reopen the 56 post offices that were closed across Kent. Today the Royal Mail is under serious threat, with the service to lose 10% of its staff in West Kent alone and by the Coalition’s plan to sell it off.

"Lib Dems supporters must be furious. It is clear their MPs have really embraced the Tory ethic of privatization regardless of consequences. The Coalition’s cuts are the most savage in living history and yet are completely unnecessary, because a fair tax system would help to prevent job losses(1). Only the Greens remain to take a firm stand against Post Office privatization.

"The Green Party not only wants the Royal Mail to remain in public hands, but we believe that the closure of the post offices three years ago must be reversed. As the Coalition steers the country towards a double dip recession, post offices are an essential service which should be present in all our urban and rural communities."
