Dear Colleagues,

Royal Mail Privatisation - Marginal Seats

Further to LTB 612/10, we write to provide an update on the process of building a broad-based and a community-based coalition to challenge the ConDem government's proposed privatisation legislation that is due to have a first reading in Parliament in October.

Regional Secretaries will be working with branches in each of the most marginal constituencies towards a launch meeting in each constituency in early September.

Between now and then urgent activity is required to build the coalition by identifying and engaging key individuals and organisations within each constituency.

To this end, a template to assist the mobilisation of this coalition has been produced and issued to Regional Secretaries. This template is intended to provide consistency and transparency to the way this part of our campaign is being implemented.

There is clearly a very significant volume of work to be undertaken over the next six weeks in order to identify and build the coalition and then have a successful launch event by means of a public meeting. However, as branches will be keenly aware, we are working to a timetable that is not of our making. The challenge is thus significant, unavoidable, but, in our view, realisable.

Branches with queries relating to the mobilisation of an anti-privatisation coalition, the organisation of local meetings and the structure of the templates that is being used to guide this process are invited to contact the appropriate Regional Secretary in the first instance.

Why don't you just get your heads out of the sand? The sell off of RM is going to happen and that is a fact, all your crying and moaning about it will do nothing but give the powers that be an even bigger excuse to sell it off to TNT or DHL. Instead of trying to derail the process why not cooperate and try to get a good deal for RM staff and try and make sure that RM can continue into the future - or is your idea to drag us all out on strike again when you don't get it all your own way and really screw things up? ConDem or Labour - it does not matter, now the ball is rolling it is not going to stop.

I have just read your previous posts,you've posted about various hard times that you have been having,do you want them to get much worse with privatisation?

No I don't, but trying to stop the sell off is futile - we may as well try and get something out of it rather than stand in the way. It does not matter what government we have this is not going to stop.

have you ever stood up for something you believe in ? i applaud the Union for making a stand against Privatisation and whether they succeed or not is not the issue. as an individual you can only do a small amount but as a collection of individuals you can make a difference .
however they like to spin it , Mandelson did not achieve his aim to part privatise the RM and this was mainly due to the lobbying of many MPs and work done by the CWU. i concede it will be more difficult this time around but the fight is worthwhile IMO.

I agree with Borders - this is one privatisation to far (well probably more than one). I honestly and truthfully believe that at some point we are going to suffer because of the amount of strategic ex-publicly/government owned business that have been sold off to foreign firms/conglomerates and the more we sell off or privatise, the more likely that something catastrophic is going to happen.

Because of this, I will be supporting the Unions anti privatisation campaign, however, I also recognise that many wont because of their own beliefs, or because they feel the Union no longer deserves their support.
