Royal Mail should not be sold to a foreign company, the leader of the country's 12,000 post offices warned yesterday.
The Government has pledged to seek 'an injection of private capital into Royal Mail', which could lead to 100 per cent of the company being sold to a foreign rival, such as German giant DHL or Dutch postal firm TNT.
But George Thomson, general secretary of the National Federation of Sub-Postmasters, said Royal Mail should be kept under British control.
'A foreign company does not have the interests of the British public at its heart in the same way,' he added.
Mr Thomson said some firms should be protected and Royal Mail is one of them.
'I think it is a perfectly reasonable argument to say that there are certain parts of British infrastructure that should be owned within the UK.'
He fears that foreign ownership of Royal Mail could lead to higher prices and a lack of investment. A long list of famous British businesses, from Jaguar to P&O, Abbey National to Cadbury, Manchester United to Scottish Power, have been sold overseas in recent years.
Foreign companies spent £32billion buying British firms last year, compared to £10billion spent by UK firms on foreign firms.
Mr Thomson is also concerned about the impact if the 'umbilical cord' between Royal Mail - which made a £262million loss last year - and the post office network is cut.
But Edward Davey, the Postal Affairs Minister, has said the Government must keep an open mind. An announcement is expected in the autumn.
Mr Thomson said that if the Coalition does go ahead with a sell-off, shares should be offered to the British public, and the Government should retain a 'golden share' to keep control.

I Wrote-During Covid-Which is still relevant now
It's good to get these types of threads, the ridiculous my manager said bollox, so we can reassure ourselves that while the world is falling apart, Royal Mail managers are still being the low-life C***S they have always been.
My BFF Clash
The daily grind of having to argue your case with an intellectual pigmy of a line manager is physically and emotionally draining.

Good God!!! It's no use making pleas to British politicians, money, money, money, is all that counts with them, and the more they can snaffle away for their lousy selves, the better as far as they're concerned.
The vitriolic hatred of anything remotely looking like a public service, by politicians of all political hues, almost certainly ensures that after more than 350 years, the postal system of Great Britain will be handed over, lock, stock, and barrel, to foreigners.
If I was head of MI5, and I was tasked to track down people who were potential traitors likely to imperil the British people, it would be the people who loudly encourage the unfettered, unregulated, slavish devotion to globalisation through free market capitalism, it's them bastards I'd be after.
