Cable due to detail government's plans for business

Vince Cable will give more details of the government's plans to help UK businesses grow when he makes his first major speech on Thursday.

The business secretary is expected to outline tough proposals to get banks to increase their lending to small and medium-sized companies.

He is also due to give more details of the coalition government's aim to reduce business regulation.

It has said it will review all new rules planned by the former government.

"We must move away from the view that the only way to solve problems is to regulate," Mr Cable said on Wednesday.

He is also tipped to use its speech on Thursday to reiterate the government's plan to bring private capital into the Royal Mail.

By following the EU Directive, Royal Mail has been placed in an unnecessary and impossible position.

The governments during the period of the growing pension deficit have never replaced the money previous governments withheld from RM which should have been paid into the fund, thereby creating the deficit.

If privateers had been allowed into the postal market in the UK without unfair and punishing subsidies obliged upon RM, the company would be a net contributor to the national economy able to provide its pensioners with the benefits members are legally contracted to enjoy. The governments of the period have essentially broken the contract with their own employees in order to facilitate privatisation by the back door, as intended or otherwise.

If our national government had stood up for its own interests, and honoured the members by paying into the fund as it should have done during this time, we would not now be in this position.

Further, mail industry employees in general, and Royal Mail employees in particular are now facing harder work in return for less income, fewer benefits, less earnings potential, less pension (if perhaps any at all in time to come), and less job-security.

Governments of the period have mismanaged Royal Mail. You have the chance to make amends for this poor performance, and restore Royal Mail to a position in the industry which will ensure the future of the USO, which will in turn safeguard the services and business offered by any privateers who wish to use RM's services for a fair price, as well as all its customers and staff.

You are quite wrong to suggest that privatising Royal Mail is the only solution to our problems- but it will take some backbone on your part to support a beloved national institution of centuries of respected and admired standing, instead of caving in to the short-termism profit-motive of the business lobby across europe.

Once private, can you honestly see the USO survivng? If you're honest, there will not be one privateer which would wish to continue to provide it. If it is to continue in those days, it will fall to the taxpayer to fund it, and we will have paid double.

Use some common sense- restore RM's ability to charge a fair price, allow it to develop new products and services, don't subsidise cherry-picking privateers which are only present due to the cheap services on offer, and pay off the deficit; then, RM will be able to provide government with a return each year, rather than present it with yet another invoice..
