Union warning over Royal Mail sale

The Government risks losing £1 million a year funding from a major union if it is "foolish and dumb-headed" enough to press ahead with controversial plans to part-privatise the Royal Mail, the Prime Minister has been warned.

The Communication Workers Union attacked the sell-off proposal and made it clear they will not support any Labour MPs who fail to back the campaign against privatisation.

Delegates at the union's annual conference in Bournemouth urged Gordon Brown to scrap the sell-off plan, especially in light of Labour's disastrous results in the council and European elections.

General secretary Billy Hayes made it clear the union will press ahead with balloting members on whether to disaffiliate from Labour if the part-privatisation is not halted.

The Government would be "foolish and dumb-headed" if it did not realise it had to start implementing Labour party policies, such as keeping the Royal Mail wholly publicly owned, he said.

"The Government must realise that when you only get 15% of the vote in the polls something is wrong with its policies. If the Government is foolish enough to go ahead with this plan we will ballot our members on whether we continue to finance the party at the next election."

Mr Hayes lambasted the Government over the Postal Services Bill, which he said could only be approved in Parliament with support from the Conservatives.
He urged ministers who have quit the Cabinet in recent days to show they were being "different" by voting against the Bill when it comes before the Commons. "We will not support people who don't support us," he warned.

Delegate Dennis Kilgariff accused Business Secretary Lord Mandelson of "lying" over the Government's plans and accused the minister of trying to give postal workers the impression that he was helping them.

Labour MPs are expected to confront the Prime Minister about the future of the Royal Mail at Monday evening's crucial meeting of the Parliamentary Labour Party.
