Socialist leader meets with postal staff to give backing

SCOTTISH Socialist Party leader Colin Fox was meeting local leaders of the postal workers' union in Edinburgh today to pledge support for their campaign against moves to sell off part of Royal Mail.

The former Lothians MSP said the move would mean a poorer service to the public.

He said a report on the future of the service concluded that "opening up the Royal Mail to the market provides no significant benefit to consumers or businesses".

He added: "The Communication Workers Union has also shown conclusively that privatisation of Royal Mail will jeopardise the universal service which guarantees a daily delivery to all 27 million households and ensures that the cost of a stamp will be the same whether you live in the Western Isles or Westminster.

"A privatised Royal Mail cannot and will not deliver on these promises and will put profits ahead of serving the public."
