OVER the weekend the South West Labour Party Conference unanimously supported and voted on keeping the post public, reflecting the Communication Workers Union position and also reflecting manifesto promises.

This was in stark contrast to what was happening a hundred yards away.

Kevin Beazer, the union's South West regional secretary, says Gordon Brown was effectively ripping up the manifesto pledges and re-writing history on the future of the post office.

He told the Herald: "We now have a situation where the Government is not only ignoring pledges in the manifesto but also the Labour Party, a growing number of MPs and the general public. It would appear the Government is hell bent on introducing failed Tory policies in regard to privatising the post office, it is an absolute betrayal of the Labour Party and the people who support it and more importantly a betrayal of the British public who will ultimately suffer higher prices and declining services as private companies rip the post office to pieces in pursuit of profit.

"The Government are in danger of scoring an own goal in the run up to the General Election.
