He has been brought back from the political wilderness to revive Labour’s flagging fortunes.

But Lord Mandelson found himself dealing with a very different kind of mess on his day off yesterday.

Dressed in a baggy grey tracksuit and comfy boots, the Business Secretary was spotted walking his dog Jack outside his north London home.

In his left hand he clutched a plastic bag containing that which all dogs, when given fresh air and a clean patch of pavement, inevitably do.

Green campaigners will be pleased to note that even though the 55-year-old now boasts the title Baron Mandelson of Foy in the county of Herefordshire and Hartlepool in the county of Durham, he was not too proud to make sure his pet’s little present
was properly disposed of.

Business Secretary Lord Mandelson is today at the centre of a storm over plans to part-privatise Royal Mail, which has torn a divide in the Labour Party.

Lord Mandelson has warned that failure to back his plans will lead to a Tory victory at the next election.

It emerged yesterday that Labour's chief whip has encouraged rebels to come up with their own proposals to save the company.

Nick Brown, who is meant to be in charge of imposing party discipline, has given the green light to Labour MPs to put forward an alternative to the Government's plans to part-privatise the company.

His extraordinary intervention came as Lord Mandelson inflamed the row over the Royal Mail by attacking the rebels for their dishonest 'scare tactics'.

His comments risk infuriating the 137 Labour MPs - including at least seven ministerial aides - who have signed a Commons motion opposing the plans to sell off up to a third of the Royal Mail to a foreign rival.

Today Royal Mail was under fire after admitting more than doubling payments into the pension pot of its chief executive Adam Crozier.

Mr Crozier received around £3.5m in pay, bonuses and pension contributions last year.
