Peter Mandelson accused of losing touch with reality

Peter Mandelson was accused of losing touch with reality yesterday for suggesting his Royal Mail sell-off could win Labour the next election.
The Business Secretary claimed voters see the move as a key test of the party's fitness for power.
He said: "Some in the party may be weary of taking decisions, but that simply signals that we are ready for a rest, inviting electoral defeat."
His remarks infuriated opponents.
Labour MP Geraldine Smith said: "He is incredibly out of touch with the British public if he thinks the only reason we will lose the election is if we don't vote for privatising the Royal Mail."
Lord Mandelson also claimed "scare tactics" used by opponents would cost posties' jobs and retirement funds if they succeed in blocking the deal.
More than 130 Labour MPs have signed a Commons motion rejecting the plan. This would force the Government to rely on Tory votes. The Cabinet is split and rebels predict there will be resignations.
A recent poll found 75 per cent of people oppose the part-privatisation plans.
Gordon Brown was jeered and booed by posties at a Labour event over the weekend.

Miss Smith is right. Every person that I've spoken to outside of RM, is set against it. Reactions go from incredulity to anger. It is a sure vote loser.Labour MP Geraldine Smith said: "He is incredibly out of touch with the British public if he thinks the only reason we will lose the election is if we don't vote for privatising the Royal Mail."
Just spilt stain-remover down my shirt. Now how do I get that out?

In Cowdenbeath on Saturday afternoon,we had folk queing to sign the petition, the reaction from everyone was one of disbelief that they were trying to sell Royal Mail, there is a load of support out there,Im in no doubt that this is THE defining issue in the demise of New Labour.
The more you know, the worse it gets.

It puts me in mind of the time Michael Portillo told the Tory Party conference that the Poll Tax could be a vote winner. He was an ex-public school poltroon too.

The only thing about Mandy is he doesn't have a seat to lose as the posh parasite was invited to get his snout in the trough by Brown. So, instead of seeing his expression change when he loses his seat, we'll just have to hope he goes through his windscreen one fine night and picture the scene.

Re: Peter Mandelson accused of losing touch with reality
The same as his Government did to us?
I remember staying up to watch the Tories getting slaughtered, and dancing round
the room
(I'd had a few drinks by then) when Portillo lost his seat.
The next day at work a mate who lived on a Council Estate told me he could hear
cheering all round the estate when that result was announced.
Another friend who had lost his Council job and was working as a minicab driver
said he had Portillo as a customer once. He said he was tempted to lock the doors
and drive him round Hackney to show him the poverty and deprivation his Government
was responsible for.

Jesus Christ ! they have been out of power for 12 years !!!!!!
Maybe they should have taken the easy option of putting the country into absolutely massive debt, that our children, grand children will be paying off in higher taxes for years to come
