Four weeks ago, I predicted that the return of Peter Mandelson from the Stygian depths of Hades would end in tears.

The only question was: whose?

Now we know. If you have tears, prepare to shed them for the 800 workers at LDV van factory in Birmingham, whose jobs are on the line.

Lord Mandy is the Business Secretary.

He is supposed to decide if the stricken manufacturer should get an emergency loan to stay in business.

But he is also a personal friend of Oleg Deripaska, the Russian billionaire who owns Gaz, LDV's parent firm. So he couldn't talk business to the top Russki businessman who has the future of British workers in his hands.

Milord Mandy ruled himself out of negotiations, for fear of provoking accusations of conflict of interest. He couldn't be seen giving the money to oily Oleg, and couldn't be seen not giving the money.

It was a lose-lose situation for the Washwood Heath plant.

What a palaver! To save Mandy's face, hundreds, if not thousands, of workers have to lose their jobs.

Now, Mandy has set his sights on creeping privatisation of the Royal Mail. He's blackmailing posties with the pensions of their former workmates to try to sell 30 per cent of the business to the Dutch company TNT.

His behaviour is beneath contempt, as is he.

yip this guy cares not one bit about anynoe but him and his buddys in the city.i cant understand how people like him get to run things.when he makes such a baxxs up of everything that he gets his greddy hands on :mfo

People like this run the show because our system is such that the greedier and more ruthless an individual is, the further up the chain they rise to wealth and power. There are also plenty of people like this in everyday life (including many posties), but they just haven't got the know how and brains and drive to get up there.
Its a sad fact that most societies work in this manner and I firmly believe that it will be the undoing of us all. It has been proved that economies cannot run on unchecked greed and now we have got to pay for that. The environment will not take it for much longer and we will all reap far worser consequencies eventually.

The right wing argument that competition is a natural state for mankind and that it best serves us in producing our needs, is a powerful argument. In reality though, this is what we came from, but not where we should be going.
Cooperation should be the primary and central part of society and it should be taught to the very young so that our natural tendencies to horde and overconsume, can be overcome. rant over..........
