Posties rally over Royal Mail sell-off

Up to 1,000 posties will join a rally tomorrow to protest at Government plans to sell off a stake in Royal Mail.

The Communication Workers Union said the partprivatisation proposed by Business Secretary Peter Mandelson will be "dangerous, damaging" and threaten jobs and the quality of service.

Royal Mail is already planning to slash costs by 10 per cent, which the union fears could cost up to 16,000 jobs.

The CWU, which will lobby MPs at Westminster, said: "Modernisation, improved services and protection of jobs can only be delivered under full public ownership."

The sell-off has split Labour, with 120 MPs urging the Government to reject it. MP John Grogan called it a "battle for the very soul of the party".
