ROYAL MAIL CAMPAIGN
Letter to Branches
No.40/2009 Ref. 24207 Date: 21st January 2009
TO: ALL BRANCHES WITH POSTAL MEMBERS
Dear Colleagues
ROYAL MAIL CAMPAIGN
It has become clear that the government intends to move speedily in dealing with the future of Royal Mail. As a result, it is crucial that we prioritise the element of our campaign in maximising support from MP’s for the Early Day Motion 428.
It is imperative therefore that every Branch makes every effort to contact their MP this week with a view to obtaining their signature to the EDM and securing support for opposing any possible legislation that brings private investment to Royal Mail.
It should be possible to attend constituency surgeries on Friday, if contact cant be made in other ways.
A conference call of the regional campaign committees will take place on Monday to receive progress reports on this key initiative.
In addition, Branches must also be collecting the details of mobile phone and email addresses of 5% of members in each workplace. This is crucial to effective communications with members as our campaign to build a positive future for a publicly owned postal service develops. Regional Secretaries must coordinate this work.
A postcard campaign will be launched as the vehicle to gain support from the public. These postcards will be issued from CWU HQ soon.
A telephone poll of the public is being commissioned as part of our ongoing media campaign. This poll will be carried out over the next week. Branches will have seen the widespread media coverage on this campaign over the last week. This has continued today with positive coverage of the Union’s appearance at the BERR select committee yesterday.
These are our current initiatives but our immediate priority is to gain support fro the EDM. This work must be carried out immediately with every Labour MP contacted personally as a minimum requirement.
Yours sincerely

It seems as though they were caught on the Hop with Hooper the response though not publicised has been good from the Union.parky wrote:OMG! is that the best they can do after getting all the top brass together at members expense!!!it must have been some P**s up!
EDM 428 - 101 signed up so far (started by a cwu sponsored MP AFAIK)
Loads of articles attacking the report in the process.
A fairly good evidence session in committee at the House of Parliment.
LTBs detailing their response.
The postcard is also a good response as well as it will let the public see our position as well. Whether its one to each address in the UK or to be handed out to interested parties is a good idea as it involves individual members and the public.
Also have you yet helped in the campaign by contact your MP. I have its very easy just visit http://www.theyworkforyou.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; and follow the links for sending an email. I also sent letter to my MPs various addresses as well, with details garnered from the same web site.

Anyway, without this site I wouldn't know what was going on, so, first off I'd like to be informed about what is going on and a clear strategy for fighting the privatisation ie. A clear list of what they/we are going to do and a time scale for it plus it might be helpful to have one person in charge of fighting it instead of several people who are having what seems like different strategies.
Plus we need a national strategy for dealing with the management cuts and what we should do about them and to let everyone know what they have to do.

Re: ROYAL MAIL CAMPAIGN
As with all campaigns its those of us on the work floor that will have the best chance of changing things. I suggest instead of bad mouthing the leadership that you start to campaign in your area. Contact your MPs, go to their surgeries, get them to sign the EDM, contact your local trades council, do a leaflet drop in your local town centre, start a petition, write letters to all the local rags, phone local station in their weekly phone ins. Get in the face of the public and put our case forward.

You could contact your MP through the http://www.theyworkforyou.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; website. It would take about the same times as posting a comment on here.donut wrote:^^ come again !!....how about 3 kids under 12 and a single parent ! ....i don`t have time to fart let alone all that crap,

To help here is a suggestion of the text of the email they will send to your MP for you. You can just cut and paste it into the email you are sending and thats it job done.
Dear <your Mps name>
I am a constituent of ours and am concerned at the impact that full implementation of the Hooper report will have on the service that Royal Mail will provide in the future. Could I therefore ask you to read the Early Day Motion No 428, and if possible respond with your comments.
I am a postman/woman and I believe that the part privatisation is a slippery slope to eventual full privatisation. It also against the Labour Party's manifesto and Warwick agreement for a "wholly owned public Royal Mail". I also believe that part privatisation will put pressure on the Universal Service Obligations especially in regard to 1 delivery to every house and business in the UK for 6 days a week. We have already seen a reduction in the service levels provided by Royal Mail, less collections, less and later daily deliveries and withdrawal of Sunday collections and can only see more pressure being put on this vital aspect of our service if a commercial and therefore profit focused partner is brought in. In sense I agree with with my unions position of being against the Privatisation of profits and the Nationalisation of debts, particularly at this particular moment.
I would therefore also urge you, if you are in agreement with the points I have raised, to endorse EDM 428 and sign it at your earliest opportunity. I look forward to receiving your reply at your convenience.

What about arranging a televised debate on the subject?Big Daz wrote:Right critics

That would create far more interest than a Postcard. It would also give the Public a chance to make up their own minds about who is in the right. Instead of being swayed by spin.

Good point. We do need to be careful about who we get to argue the CWU case.
