I’ve often wondered this - say if someone this evening decided to buy up lots of shares, would they still receive the dividend? Or would they only receive the dividend if they were in possession of the shares when the dividend announcement is made?
The day is gonna come when we’re all gonna have to testify.

You have to hold the shares on the record date.

Thank you for that. Intrigued about the section on that link about the Dividend Re-Investment Plan whereby instead of receiving a dividend the money is reinvested in more shares at favourable commission rates. Not sure if it applies to those (me!) buying through my wages in the share incentive plan though.

I used to automatically reinvest the dividends from the shares I bought myself when RM was first privatised and through the SAYE scheme. But decided to sell when they were last at £6 ish.
I'd bought some at around £2 or less, so made a nice little profit on them.

I don't think it's possible to reinvest dividends from RM shares held in the SIP, so that includes both the free shares and those bought via the P&M scheme.

The record date is 2nd december I think, so dividend will be based on shareholding at that point.

As per the link provided by Neri1983:

Dividends will be paid on 12th January 2022 to shareholders on the register at the close of business on 3rd December. The ex dividend date is 2nd December.

Prices usually climb just before the dividend date and drop afterward.

As for me I tend to take the long term view I brought some shares during the IPO and received the employee shares, in time the dividend return will be more than the original value of the share.
