hi just checked with employee shareline and if the share price stays at the original price or lower then you wont pay any tax. The only fee you would incur is the 0.5% handling fee for Equintini. Its only a problem to sell the shares if they go higher than what there were when you were given them so its good that they stay the same of slightly lower as it makes a huge difference!

Wrong! The person you spoke to obviously doesn't know what they're talking about.

We've known for 3 years that we pay tax and NI if selling between 3 and 5 years, and how much has been explained in all 3 'guide to RM shares' booklets we've received and has been done to death on these forums. Have a look at pages 28 & 29 here: https://www.myroyalmail.com/sites/defau ... ochure.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

My old man once said to me 'You're never more alive than you are today.. tomorrow you are one day nearer Boot Hill'. He served right through World War Two and died before he could draw his pension. I've always tried to enjoy what money I have with my loved ones today. Yes it's sensible to be a bit frugal and pragmatic with money, but i've been to many a funeral over the years involving friends younger than I was. I don't judge people because it's a personal choice but I'll be selling mine, give a few quid to my Son, treat my Mam and have a nice Christmas. It's not life or death, it's a good choice to have. Good health to one & all whatever you do!

People keep saying you will lose 32%if you sell now ,but no one know what the share price will be in 2 years time when no tax and NI is due, myself i cant see how the footsie is at a near record high and is due a massive correction and taking a hit now might not seem so bad in 2 years just my honest opinion.

Read somewhere that Equiniti takes a selling fee % aswell, am i right thinking this??

Yep thought i read it, from their website

If you sell your Free Shares at any time, you may have to pay a fee (known as commission). Equiniti’s commission rate is currently 0.5% of the gross value (before income tax and National Insurance have been taken off) or £17.50, whichever is higher. You will need to pay this fee every time you sell any Free Shares.

so that is 32% TAX & N.I + 0.5% commission

Each to their own but I think you're being very short sighted and not doing your son justice. Keep em and give him the lot plus the divs as he grows up and presumably tries to save for a house. Yes, live for today but if you took that literally you'd not be putting money into a pension would you? In the next two yrs you'll be giving away the equivalent of working for free for A MONTH! As I said, each to their own though. You must be pretty hard up for cash, that's all I can say. Gl though.

If you can make the 32% hit back within a year or 2 any chance of giving us all a clue :Very Happy :Very Happy :thumbup
You can easily make that back in a yr dealing shares.... If you know what yer doing. Just keeping these will give you around 5% yield per yr, and you didn't even shell anything out for them. Add capital gains onto that and I really can't see why unless the wolves are at the door, you would sell now.

These shares have been received with NO financial outlay, so in my eyes any gain is a bonus. Ok, the government are rubbing their hands but they were always going to get their share, they always do.
For us guys, if someone came up to you and said 'here's £2000 free' what would do?
That's not quite the full picture now is it. You forgot to add 'or wait two yrs and most likely get £3k' that's the choice you got.

Nope. House is paid off, don't smoke, don't gamble. I have money put by. I saved money for my Son since he was born, he'll be fine. It's a couple of grand that's all. The garden room extension cost me 18 grand last year.. it's extra money in my eyes.. so i'll be spending it unwisely! Cheers.

Good on yer, then. If you can afford to give away a grand, go for it. My house too, is paid for and I'm savvy enough financially to be able to retire when I hit 55. I won't be tossing a grand away, I work too bloody hard for it!

Going to sell mine and the timing is perfect for me, need a lump sum for building work as I'm moving so I can be rent free for the first time in 34 years.
So keep on moving, moving, moving your feet
Keep on shuf-shuf-shuffling to this ghost dance beat
Just keep on walking down never ending streets
