North-east street ‘up in arms’ over mail suspension following dog attack

Locals on Dundonnie Street have been told they must collect correspondence from the post office until Royal Mail bosses have guarantees the offending animal is under control.

A female employee was left with a gash on her arm as she made her rounds in Boddam last week.

She required hospital treatment for her injuries and is understood to be at home recuperating.

It is the second case of its kind this year following another attack in July.

After the latest incident mail bosses stopped all deliveries to residents and they reported the incident to police.

One resident, who did not want to be named, said: “When the dog attacked the postie the first time one of the bosses from Peterhead had to do the deliveries.

“But now the dog has bit her the whole street’s mail has been stopped.

“She is a fantastic postie. She is a really lovely woman.

“There is never any hassle and it is a shame as she has been a postie for years.”

She added: “Everybody is up in arms about it and thinks it is a disgrace.

“The post office isn’t that far, but it is for old people if they have to walk to it.”

Police confirmed the incident has been reported to them and inquiries are ongoing.

Royal Mail has said the suspension will remain in place until the dog’s owner provides evidence that the pet is secure.

A spokeswoman for the company said: “Mail is already suspended to the owner’s address after a previous attack on one of our workers in July.

“Due to the fact that the dog attacked while loose in the street and was not under control, mail deliveries to the rest of Dundonnie Street have been suspended.

“We apologise to the other residents for the inconvenience of picking up their mail but Royal Mail takes the safety or our postmen and women very seriously indeed and we only suspend deliveries as a last resort.

“Customers can pick up mail from the local post office until we are assured that the dog is under control. The police have also been notified.”
