We are undergoing big changes in our office ,been a css operator for 8 years and things are changing,a roster is being set up for breaks,under health and safety we understand that an operator can only run a machine for 2hrs then off for 20 mins ,in our office we have 3 people to 2 machines (if we are lucky) anyway management argue that the floater is not eligible for the 20 min break in 2hrs,i argue that the floater actually does more repetitive strain work as he boxes off 2 machines and helps load 2 machines thus doing twice the work of an operator,management say wait for this"as the floater does not press the start button he is not an operator therefore not entitled to 20mins off in 2 hrs"can anyone shed light on this as it sounds ridiculous.I then pointed out if the operator is fixing a jam in the machine at the top end and the floater is stood near the feeder the floater must not press the start button to see if jam is clear the management said correct don't think they have thought this through surely from their prospective that will slow down production,hope the operator doesn't trap his fingers or something else because if I am the floater I cant press the emergency stop-UTTER RUBBISH

Not sure of the Ins and outs of this one as I'm not sure what it is exactly you do, I would definitely like to see a SSOW for the activity.
However if the floater is exposed to the same risks that is presented by the activity that your exposed, and breaks are apportioned in accordance to level of exposure then floaters would be entitled to the same breaks as operators, whether floaters press a button or not is immaterial, but you say they do double, so the floaters activity would need to be risk assessed separately to calculate the effects of exposure to the floater and break times could then be allocated accordingly. If the risk assessment (RA) is carried out it would need to include a Union safety Representative to avoid any bias outcome, you could also contribute to the RA as you have up to date experience and knowledge of the process.
