Royal Mail Group is recognised by the British Safety Council

Royal Mail Group Safety was awarded a 'merit' at the prestigious British Safety Council Awards, for its submission highlighting our safety standards across the business.

Merit awards were also given to Royal Mail Group Property for projects completed with Wates Construction and Wates Retail. Parcelforce Worldwide was also awarded a merit for its work with Miller Construction.

Colleagues from Norwich mail centre represented the business at the awards, after assisting safety communications manager Nicholas Burns with our award submission.

Norwich mail centre manager John O’Shea (pictured above, right, with Ben Hannant) says: ‘The people at Norwich mail centre are all well engaged. Without their ideas, initiative and respect, the progress made in the past three years would have not been possible.

‘The plant conducted ground-breaking root-cause analysis to discover the real cause of incidents that had taken place.’

Shaun Davis, group safety, health, wellbeing and sustainability director, added: ‘The safety, health and wellbeing of all our people and those we work with, especially members of the public, is of paramount importance.

‘The recognition that awards such as these give us is incredibly encouraging, and I am delighted that Royal Mail Group has been recognised for the hard work we all do.

‘Furthermore, these awards remind us all that we are part of a much bigger community and that collectively we can, and do, all make a difference to safety, health and wellbeing in the workplace.’

I've been in work over 35 years now, for a few other firms besides Royal Mail, and never, never, in all that time, have I seen any job take such a heavy toll on the physical well-being of its staff.
If people aren't forced to go long-term sick, they're hobbling around the office like old men, doing their level best to complete rounds which are far too big.
The people responsible for this reprehensible state of affairs, whether they be management, union appeasers, or just simply ignorant colleagues, all should be flogged from one end of the high street, to the other.

Note that it said Royal Mail GROUP and not Royal Mail. Take out the other parts of "The GROUP and I bet you'd get different figures.

Had something like this in the Company I used to work for over 10 years ago. We, as an individual company, had five annual gold awards on the trot for safety but as soon as we had to add in other parts of the group of companies we dropped down to a Bronze! Would be interesting to see how we, as Royal Mail, actually did on safety. I bet we'd just about scrape in with a pass?

If you look at the awards "we" got a Merit... but only if you work at any of the places listed!

What is the pass mark?
The adjudicator will apply the marking scheme and award a score out of 60.

Grades will be awarded as follows:

 60 Distinction
 48 – 59 Merit
 36 – 47 Pass

Any application scoring 30-35, i.e. a borderline fail, will be remarked by the chief adjudicator to check
the accuracy of the marking. Similar borderline reviews will be conducted at the merit and distinction
grade boundaries. The chief adjudicator’s decision is final.

Obviously didn't speak to the manager who told the night drivers they can move as many loaded yorks at a time as they like during the night (he regularly moves three) but only one when the early staff come in !!!! #safety-whatsafety

They'd moan about the flogging.. saying you're either doing it wrong or using the wrong equipment for it.

I do get your point though. Useless bunch of tw**s have no idea about the work and should go out on deliveries and then they'd rethink the job with safety methods in mind.

They would say, and with some justification, what has safety and accident reduction/prevention got to do with heavy work loads?
Both scenarios may end up with damaged bodies but the path to those unfortunate conclusions are very different, but there's no reason why both can't be tackled simultaneously though using different methods.
