Issue postmen with dog deterrent

I refer to the unfortunate incident where a postman has been bitten by a dog whilst delivering mail (LT, February 27) and the over-reaction by Royal Mail union officials to punish 60 homes, depriving them from receiving their mail.

This situation could have been avoided by the issue of a compact, portable dog deterrent to all postal staff.

This implement emits a sound inaudible to the human ear but acts as a total deterrent to an approaching dog.

I suggest that, from a health and safety point of view, the Royal Mail give my suggestion some consideration and I only hope that the delivery of mail to the frustrated residents of Worcester Road is swiftly resumed.

The old dog dazer, had one doesn't work on all dogs, we have an ultrasonic bark buster for one of our dogs, and that doesn't work either. If this person is so concerned about his neighbours getting their mail he could collect it for them, and deliver it himself.

they are a load of crap.. they dont work as a deterrent. in fact some of them make the dog even more aggressive. you could try throwing it at the dog but cant see it having any effect. one posty i knew used a pepper pot,, but he was reprimanded and warned that any repeat could see him sacked. that was ten yrs back though.

Q: Posties wear red, is this a colour that can wind dogs up?

A lot of people still believe that dogs only see in black and white – in fact they do see many colours but are red-green colourblind – therefore they don’t distinguish the colour red. What they are very good at is identifying patterns and logos – so for dogs that react to any postman it could be the ‘pattern‘ on the uniform that the dog associates with these particular strangers.
