Man charged as dog attacks postie

A POSTMAN who was mauled by a dog could need plastic surgery.

Mac McCarthy was completing his round last Thursday when he was attacked by a grey Staffordshire Bull Terrier in Mill Lane, Grays, at 3.40pm.

The dog jumped out of a car before attacking Mr McCarthy, causing wounds, pictured right.

The postie was still in hospital on Monday and on Friday a spokesman from the Royal Mail described the wound as “extreme”.

She said: “The postman was supposed to go down for surgery this morning and he needs to see if he will need plastic surgery.”

Chief Insp Ben Hodder, Thurrock District Commander, confirmed the arrest of the dog owner. He said: “The incident happened in Mill Lane. We arrested one man and the dog was seized.

“It is now up to the court to determine whether the animal is destroyed. We take incidents like these very seriously.”

The attack happened during the Royal Mail and Communication Workers Union’s Dog Awareness Week.

It was aimed at appealing to dog owners and advising them on how to keep their dogs under control.

Dave Joyce, of the Communication Workers Union, said the number of dog bites remains “unacceptably high”.

Vilius Norvaisa, 33, of Mill Lane, Grays, was charged with allowing a dog to be dangerously out of control in a public place causing injury.

He will appear at Basildon Magistrates’ Court on August 5.
