What Does Bracknell Think: Animal attacks on postmen

This week we asked our panel what they thought about figures from a freedom of information request which revealed postmen and women were attacked by dogs 48 times in Bracknell in the past year.

Workers were also injured by a cat, bee and other or unknown animals.

Pat Kennewell, of Birch and Hanworth Liaison Group: “As a dog owner myself I cannot understand these attacks.

“Are the dogs running loose so they are able to attack anyone or is it that they are on private property so the mad laws protect the owner?

“It is a criminal offence to not have a dog under control and this should apply in all instances when an attack or bite occurs.

“Owners must be held responsible for the attack and the animal should be put down.

“Recompense should be payable too.

“I am an animal lover but people should be more important than animals.

“We have had a number of instances very recently where horrific injury and even death has happened because of uncontrolled dogs that had demonstrated they could not be trusted, yet the owners have not faced prosecution. Laws need to change.”

Hazel Kent of Bracknell Market: “I presume the poor posties will now be issued with a beekeeping hood and protective clothing.

“Joking aside, I do have sympathy for these workers as nobody should be subject to abuse whether it be from an animal or a human being but unfortunately, status dogs are the norm so until some form of licensing is brought back in, I can only see it continuing.”

Andrew Freeman, a Betterware distributor from Bullbrook: “I think this is disgusting. If a home is dangerous to deliver to, then they should have to pick their mail up from the sorting office. As a Betterware distributor I have to post books through doors.

“I never put my fingers all the way through as many homes seem to have very excited dogs in waiting behind the door.

“I also come across houses with no letterbox at all.

“I think the posties should be given more respect, as we all need our mail delivered.”

Dogs are a pain in the arse, had one that was literally hanging out a letter box a few weeks ago, would have definitely bitten me if I hadn't have seen it first.
